September Update

Phew what a month September was! The beginning of Spring came with some adorable little floofs! Of the 17 eggs Miss Socks was sitting on 14 hatched. Sadly at the time of writing this 6 have been lost to predators or misadventure. We suspect 7 of the remaining 8 are girls but time will tell us on that one.

We have had next to no rain and only a few nice cloudy rain potential days. The garden is really starting to show signs of the prolonged dry however it has so much more life in it than this time last year which makes me super thankful as gardening still gives me that awesome sense of hope and not dread!

With the beginning of Spring I’ve begun planting plenty of melon plants 🍉and harvested a bumped crop of mulberries (with the ‘help’ of my kids of course ;) ). I made Mulberry Jam, Mulberry Leaf Tea, Mulberry Muffins, Mulberry Icypoles, Mulberry Smoothies and I also have half a freezer full of frozen mulberries for when I start to miss the daily Mulberries again 😂😂

I attended my first local Growers markets at the Imbil Community & Sports Club with the wonderful Off Grid Mumma, Caity, and had an absolute blast (selling mulberries if you couldn’t see that one coming 😂). There was some really amazing produce from everyone and it was great to see locals coming out and supporting us all. I have high hopes for the future of that growers market as it has a whole lot of potential!

Towards the end of the month I chased hubs out into the field to slash our longer grass as there have been quite a few fires in surrounding areas (always on the windiest days too!?) and Fire Mitigation has been playing on my mind so much so I have finally written a long researched post about it!

On the animal spotting front I now have 384 identified species on my iNaturalist account after dusting off my DSLR and managing to get a few identifiable bird photos. There are so many birds I’ve discounted as being the same that turned out to be different! I am absolutely loving the diversity such a relatively small area can have!
